CCSI to supply cable for Varuna Submarine Cable to connect Indonesian islands

Varuna Cable System Indonesia Submarine Fiber Overview

On April 1, 2022,ย PT Communication Cable Systems Indonesia Tbk. (CCSI)ย andย PT NAP Info Lintas Nusa (Matrix NAP Info)ย formed a joint venture calledย PT Varuna Cahaya Santosaย to build theย Varuna Cable System Indonesia submarine fiber network. This highโ€‘capacity subsea system will enhance domestic connectivity and support rising bandwidth demand across the archipelago.

Together, the partners aim to deliver a modern, resilient backbone that serves carriers, enterprises, and cloud providers. In addition, the project strengthens Indonesiaโ€™s role as a regional digital hub.

Designing the Varuna Cable System Indonesia Submarine Fiber

Under the joint venture,ย CCSIย will manufacture theย 48โ€‘core submarine fiber optic cableย for the Varuna Cable System. The lightweight, repeaterless design will useย singleโ€‘ or doubleโ€‘armored cableย and comply with multiple international certification standards.

Project plans targetย network construction completion within 24 months. After that, the team will deploy the cable along Indonesiaโ€™s national corridor, which improves coverage, resilience, and route diversity.

3,400 km Loop Connecting Key Indonesian Islands

Theย Varuna Cable System Indonesia submarine fiberย route will span aboutย 3,400 kmย and form a loop that connects major islands and cities. The system will link: Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Labuan Bajo, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Bawean, and Madura Island, then return to Java.

By creating a loop, the network increases redundancy and uptime for users. If one segment experiences a fault, traffic can reroute in the opposite direction, which improves service continuity.

Strategic Cooperation with Mitsui

CCSI and Matrix NAP Info also reported thatย Mitsui & Co., Ltd.ย has expressed interest in joiningย PT Varuna Cahaya Santosa. This potential threeโ€‘party cooperation would bring additional global experience, capital, and commercial reach to the Varuna Cable System.

According toย Peter Djatmiko, president director ofย CCSIย andย VCS, the CCSI / Matrix NAP Info / Mitsui collaboration shows aย strong commitment to crossโ€‘industry strategic partnersย that will use the Varuna network. As a result, customers can expect a robust, longโ€‘term platform for their connectivity needs.

CCSIโ€™s Submarine Cable Manufacturing Capability and History

CCSIย is currentlyย Indonesiaโ€™s only cable manufacturer capable of producing submarine cables. Its factory in theย Krakatau Industrial Estate in Cilegon, Bantenย can produce up toย 1.6 million fiber km per year, which supports both domestic and regional subsea projects.

The company traces its origins toย 1996ย asย PT Siemens Kabel Optik, a joint venture withย Siemens AG (Germany). Later,ย Corning Inc.ย acquired the business before it transitioned to local ownership as CCSI. Since then, CCSI has maintained a long partnership withย Corning, which continues to supply optical fiber for the CCSI plant.
