Theย Hengtong Group terrestrial cable project in Zhoushanย has achieved a historic milestone by completing Chinaโs first terrestrial cable crossing between two islands. The 10โฏkV, oneโkilometerโlong cable now connectsย Zhoushanย andย Shangyuanshan Islandsย inย Zhejiang Province, marking a major leap in the countryโs islandโtoโisland energy transmission technology.
According toย China Daily, traditional interโisland power transmission in China relies onย submarine cables. However, coastal regions like Zhoushan experienceย high ship traffic and dense waterways, increasing the risk of anchor damage to undersea lines. To overcome this challenge, theย Hengtong Groupย worked with theย State Grid Zhoushan Power Supply Companyย to design aย deeperโburied terrestrial cable systemโa safer and more durable method for energy transfer between islands.
Li Zhen, head of the projectโs design team, explained that the team aimed to reduce bothย costs and construction complexityย by adopting a terrestrial approach. They created aย preโlaid channel beneath the seabed, ensuring the cable remained stable and fully protected.
To minimizeย tension and friction, engineers used aย wire rope traction system, forming a type of โexoskeletonโ around the cable. They also appliedย pipeline lubrication materialsย during installation to reduce drag. Together, these measures ensured the cableโs integrity throughout the laying process and boosted installation efficiency.
Zhen stated that this technology could be applied widely to islands separated byย short or medium distances of up to 2โฏkm. Over time, the approach could scale toย longer connectionsย across broader stretches of Chinaโs coastline. The successfulย Hengtong Group terrestrial cable project in Zhoushanย sets a precedent for future islandโlinking projects and supports the countryโs goals for improved coastal energy networks.
