Advancing Low-Carbon DRI Technology

Emirates Steel Arkan plans to study the installation of an e-PGH (electrical Process Gas Heater) at its direct reduced iron (DRI) plant to further cut its carbon footprint. In particular, this electrical heating technology can support more efficient and cleaner process gas management in DRI production.โ€‹

Currently, the company operates two low-emission minimills for long products, including wire rod, that use Energiron DRI technology and Hytemp pneumatic charging to feed hot DRI at up to 600ยฐC into the electric arc furnace (EAF). As a result, these technologies support high productivity while reducing direct emissions compared with traditional blast furnace routes.โ€‹

Leadership Commitment to Innovation

Saeed Alghafri, CEO of Emirates Steel Arkan, and Rolando Paolone, CEO and CTO of Danieli, signed the MoU at Danieliโ€™s headquarters in Italy. During the signing, Alghafri highlighted that this partnership marks an important step in the companyโ€™s drive for innovation and technological excellence in low-carbon steelmaking.โ€‹

Furthermore, the collaboration shows both companiesโ€™ shared goal to deploy advanced process technologies that lower the carbon intensity of steel production while maintaining product quality and efficiency.โ€‹โ€‹

Emirates Steel Arkanโ€™s Wire Rod Strength

Emirates Steel Arkan is the UAEโ€™s largest steel and building materials manufacturer and a leading wire rod producer in the GCC region. Its high-speed wire rod mill has annual capacity of about 550,000 metric tons and can produce up to 110 meters of carbon steel wire rod per second.โ€‹

Consequently, this strong production base positions Emirates Steel Arkan to supply low-emission wire rod and other long products to regional and international customers as it advances its decarbonization roadmap.โ€‹
