LS Cable & System Expands with Major HVDC Cable Facility

LS Cable & Systemย (LS C&S) completedย Asiaโ€™s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater cable production plantย in Donghae, Gangwon Province, South Korea. The new facility, calledย Submarine Building 4, marks a major milestone for the companyโ€™s growing submarine cable business.

Inside the New HVDC Plant

The new Donghae plant features a 172-meter-tall vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) tower covering 34,816 square meters of floor space. LS C&S invested approximately $141 million in the project, which began construction in July 2021. With this new facility, the company significantly boosts its capacity to produce advanced underwater power cables for global energy projects.

Accelerating Growth in the Energy Transition Era

Since opening South Koreaโ€™s first submarine cable plant in 2008, LS C&S has made consistent investments to expand its marine and offshore power cable capabilities. Recently, the company strengthened its market position by acquiring a 43.8% stake inย KT Submarine, becoming its largest shareholder. This move enhances LS C&Sโ€™s presence in both domestic and international cable markets.

LS C&S CEO Koo Bon-gyu emphasized that the new HVDC plant will accelerate the companyโ€™s growth amid the global energy transition. โ€œWe will contribute to the advancement of the electric power industry through efficient energy networks and improved national competitiveness,โ€ he said.

Expanding International Reach

In December, LS C&S secured a landmark contract to supply HVDC cables for the Vanguard Wind Power Complex in the United Kingdom, marking Koreaโ€™s largest cable deal in Europe to date. This achievement highlights the companyโ€™s growing influence in global renewable energy projects.

At the completion ceremony, more than 100 distinguished guests attended, including LS Group Chairman Koo Ja-eun, LS Corp. CEO Myung Roe-hyun, and LS C&S CEO Koo Bon-kyu. Their presence underscored the projectโ€™s strategic importance for both LS Group and Koreaโ€™s energy sector.
