Nexans to supply cable for Revolution Wind Farm in the U.S. for ร˜rsted-Eversource

Nexans Revolution Wind Export Cable Contract

On April 1, 2022,ย Nexansย (official site) announced a contract withย ร˜rstedย (site) andย Eversourceย (site). The company will supply theย export cable linkย that connects theย Revolution Wind Farmย to the U.S. onshore grid. This offshore wind project will deliver renewable power to customers in both Rhode Island and Connecticut, and it will support each stateโ€™s clean energy goals.

Nexans will produce the export cable, which mainly usesย aluminum mediumโ€‘voltage technology, in collaboration withย Nexans Indecoย in Peru. Production will take place at one of the Nexans Group plants in theย Andean region, so the project benefits from regional manufacturing expertise. The engineering team optimized the conductor design to meet the projectโ€™s technical requirements. In addition, Nexans scheduled the first deliveries for May 2022 to keep the construction timeline on track.

This contract representsย Nexansโ€™ first cable installation project in the U.S.ย under its wider frame agreement with ร˜rsted and Eversource. Theย Export Cable Framework Agreement, signed in December 2019 betweenย ร˜rsted Wind Power North America LLCย and Nexans, gives the company the opportunity to supply up toย 1,000 km of highโ€‘voltage subsea cables in the U.S. by 2027. As a result, the Revolution Wind export cable project becomes the first project delivered under this agreement and directly supports theย energy transition in North America.

Installation and Project Impact

For the offshore installation, Nexans will deploy its advanced cableโ€‘laying vessel,ย Nexans Aurora. The company notes that this vessel is the first of its kind in the offshore cableโ€‘laying sector, and it showcases Nexansโ€™ focus on innovation, precise marine installation, and reliable subsea cable solutions.

Theย 704 MW Revolution Wind Farmย sits more than 15 miles south of the Rhode Island coast and 32 miles southeast of the Connecticut coast. This location allows the project to tap strong offshore wind resources while still serving onshore demand centers. The wind farm will help meet the energy needs of both states and support their longโ€‘term clean energy and decarbonization targets. Nexans executive vice president for subsea and land systems,ย Ragnhild Katteland, also reaffirmed the companyโ€™s longโ€‘term commitment to the U.S. offshore wind industry and its partnership with ร˜rsted and Eversource on this historic project.
