Nexans wins cable project for what will be the worldโ€™s longest, deepest interconnect

Nexans EuroAsia Interconnector Contract Win

Nexans has secured aย โ‚ฌ1.43 billionย turnkey contract for theย EuroAsia Interconnectorย section that linksย Greece and Cyprus. This โ€œhistoric firstโ€ strengthens the companyโ€™s leadership in longโ€‘distance subsea power transmission and directly supports Europeโ€™s shift to cleaner energy.

Project Scope and Technical Design

The EuroAsia Interconnector forms part of a wider effort to connect the grids ofย Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. It uses aย 525 kV highโ€‘voltage direct current (HVDC)ย system that will rank as theย longest and deepest subsea interconnector in the world. The biโ€‘pole route spansย 2 x 900 kmย and reaches depths of more thanย 3,000 metersย on the Mediterranean Sea floor.

Nexans will manufacture massโ€‘impregnated HVDC cables at its plants inย Halden, Norway, andย Futtsu, Japan. It will then install them using theย Nexans Auroraย andย Nexans Skagerrakย cableโ€‘laying vessels, providing a full turnkey solution from factory to seabed.

Capacity, Timeline, and Regional Impact

The interconnector will initially carry up toย 1,000 MWย among Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. It can later increase capacity toย 2,000 MW, which equals the average electricity use of aboutย three million households. As a result, the project willย end Cyprusโ€™s energy isolationย and create a powerful โ€œenergy highwayโ€ between Europe and Asia.

Project phasing includesย Pole One, targeted forย 2028, andย Pole Two, planned forย 2029. Once fully in service, the link will improve regional energy security, support crossโ€‘border power trading, and make it easier to integrate large amounts of renewable generation.

Nexansโ€™ Role in the Energy Transition

Nexans CEOย Christopher Guรฉrinย says the project shows the company canย push the limitsย of highโ€‘voltage transmission to meet growing demand. He also calls the EuroAsia Interconnector a key step toward aย carbonโ€‘free economy, aligned with Nexansโ€™ global electrification strategy and the broader drive to reachย netโ€‘zero emissions.

EU PCI Status and Support for the Nexans EuroAsia Interconnector Contract

The European Union has classified the EuroAsia Interconnector as aย Project of Common Interest (PCI). This status helps accelerate planning and permitting, reduce administrative costs, and encourage public participation.

To qualify as a PCI, a project must advance EUย energy and climate goals, so much of the power flowing through the link will come fromย renewable and decarbonized sources. Greeceโ€™s transmission system operator,ย IPTO, also provides essential technical and operational support to move the project forward.
