NKT and Walsin Lihwa break ground on new submarine cable plant in Taiwan

New Submarine Cable Facility in Kaohsiung

NKT HV Cables AB, part of theย NKT Group, andย Walsin Lihwa Corporationย have broken ground on a newย submarine cable manufacturing plantย inย Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The facility will produceย highโ€‘ and mediumโ€‘voltage offshore power cablesย to serve Taiwanโ€™s fastโ€‘growing wind energy market.

Expanding Offshore Cable Production

The joint venture,ย Walsin Energy Cable System Co., Ltd., plans to complete construction byย 2025ย and begin full operations byย 2027. Once finished, it will becomeย Taiwanโ€™s first plantย dedicated to submarine cable production. This marks a major milestone in the nationโ€™s renewable energy development.

The factory will coverย 233,888 square meters of landย and include nearlyย 60,000 square meters of building space. It will specialize inย exportย andย interโ€‘array cables, which connect offshore wind turbines to the mainland power grid.

Partnering for Technology and Growth

This project combinesย NKTโ€™s expertise in advanced cable technologyย with Walsin Lihwaโ€™s strong industrial and manufacturing base. Together, the companies aim to provide efficient, costโ€‘effective, and reliable cable solutions that support Asiaโ€™s offshore wind growth.

Founded inย 1966, Walsin Lihwa operates manufacturing sites inย Taiwan,ย China,ย the United States,ย Italy,ย Malaysia, andย Indonesia. With more thanย 10,000 employees, the company brings decades of experience to the renewable energy supply chain.

Supporting Taiwanโ€™s Clean Energy Goals

โ€œLocal cable production ensures a stable supply for offshore wind projects and strengthens Taiwanโ€™s energy resilience,โ€ saidย Yuโ€‘Lon Chiao, Chairman of Walsin Lihwa. โ€œWeโ€™re proud to partner with NKT to deliver highโ€‘quality, competitive submarine cables to developers across the region.โ€

Will Hendrikx, COO and Deputy CEO ofย NKT, added, โ€œOur partnership with Walsin will help build a trusted local leader in submarine cable manufacturing and accelerate Taiwanโ€™s clean energy transition.โ€

Strengthening the Renewable Energy Supply Chain

When complete, the new Kaohsiung facility will improve supply reliability and reduce lead times for offshore wind projects. The investment establishes a key foundation for Taiwanโ€™sย renewable energy future, creating local expertise and supporting sustainable growth for years ahead.
