NKT Johan Sverdrup HVDC Cable Project Supports Offshore Electrification

The NKT Johan Sverdrup HVDC cable project will deliver offshore power to one of Norway’s largest oil fields. NKT secured the contract to install 200 km of 80 kV high-voltage DC (HVDC) cables for the second phase of the Johan Sverdrup development. Project Scope and Technical Details

NKT will design, supply, and install a Â±80 kV HVDC cable system. The project carries an estimated value of â‚¬110 million. The company expects to finalize the contract shortly, with system delivery planned for late 2019.

The cable will transmit electricity directly from the Norwegian onshore power grid to the offshore oil field. As a result, the solution will improve efficiency and reduce reliance on offshore power generation.

Reducing Emissions with Power from Shore

The NKT Johan Sverdrup HVDC cable project supports a more sustainable approach to oil and gas production. Powering offshore platforms from shore significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional methods. Therefore, the project aligns with industry efforts to lower environmental impact.

Strong Partnership with Equinor

NKT continues its collaboration with Equinor Energy AS, a long-term customer and key operator in Norway. This project highlights NKT’s expertise in delivering turnkey HVDC solutions.

NKT President and CEO Michael Hedegaard Lyng emphasized the company’s advanced DC technology capabilities. He also pointed to the strategic importance of projects in offshore energy, including oil and gas, offshore wind, and interconnectors.

Proven Track Record in Offshore Cable Installation

Earlier in 2018, NKT completed the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup project. The company used its specialized cable-laying vessel, NKT Victoria, to install cables at depths of up to 600 meters.

This installation ranked among the deepest deployments of bundled HVDC cables worldwide. In addition, the first phase created the longest extruded offshore cable connection to an oil and gas platform.
