NKT HVDC Hertel-New York Contract Backs CHPE Project
NKTย signed a contract to supply theย high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore power cable systemย for theย Hertel-New York project. This Canadian transmission line links directly to theย Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE), which will carry clean hydropower fromย Canadaย toย New York City.

Under the contract, NKT willย design and manufactureย aย 2 x 60 km, 400 kV HVDC onshore cable system. The deal has an estimated value ofย โฌ90 million. NKT will produce the cables at its factory inย Karlskrona, Sweden, and plans to deliver them inย 2024.
How the NKT HVDC Hertel-New York Contract Supports Hydropower Flow
Theย Hertel-New Yorkย project plays a vital role in movingย sustainable hydropowerย fromย Hydro-Quรฉbecย to New York State. It will transmit onshore power from theย Hertel substation in Quรฉbecย to aย submarine cable sectionย that runs toward theย U.S. border. At that point, the system connects into theย CHPE transmission lineย and continues on to New York.
When the full CHPE system enters service, it will rank among theย largest infrastructure investments in New Yorkโs history. In addition, it will help the state reach its goal of obtainingย 70% of power generation and consumption from renewable energy by 2030.
