NKTย won a supply contract to deliver the high-voltage DC onshore and offshore export cable system for theย Hornsea 3ย project, whichย รrstedย is developing in the North Sea. The agreement covers design, manufacturing, jointing, and termination of the entire export power cable system.
Hornsea 3 will use two circuits with about 170 km of 320 kV DC offshore cable and 50 km of 320 kV DC onshore cable, plus four circuits over 1.5 km of 400 kV AC onshore cable. The DC system will connect the offshore wind turbines to the substation, while the AC cables will link the substation to the UK national grid. The final order carries an estimated value of approximately โฌ500 million.
NKT previously delivered the export cable system for the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm, completing that project in 2022. Subject to รrstedโs final investment decision, Hornsea 3 will sit in the North Sea around 160 km off the Yorkshire coast. When Hornsea 3 comes online, the combined capacity of Hornsea 1, 2, and 3 will exceed 5 GW and supply green power to millions of UK homes.
NKT will manufacture the Hornsea 3 cables at its high-voltage factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, with project completion targeted for 2027.
