Prysmian reports better carbon rating; subsidiary wins award for its green work

Prysmian Raises CDP Rating and Lowers Emissions

Prysmian Groupย reports that itsย CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project)ย climate score has improved fromย โ€œBโ€ to โ€œA-โ€. Over the same period (2021 vs. 2019), the company also reduced itsย Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 22%.

Learn more about the groupโ€™s sustainability strategy atย Prysmian Group.

The company links this progress to lower energy consumption, greater electrification and broader use ofย renewable energy. Inย 2021, Prysmian still achieved a furtherย 3% emission reduction, even after it acquiredย four new production sites. It did so through focused actions such as installingย LED lighting, adoptingย biomass boilersย and replacing older machinery with more efficient equipment.

Prysmian also installed newย solar farmsย at several factories. It now plans to expand the share ofย selfโ€‘generated renewable energyย significantly in the coming years.

โ€œClimate is the most urgent pillar of sustainability and we must deliver results quickly in order to guarantee a better future for next generations,โ€ saidย Maria Cristina Bifulco,ย Chief Sustainability Officer and Investor Relations Vice Presidentย at Prysmian. She added that theย A- CDP rankingย confirms the strength of the groupโ€™s decarbonization path and that recent recognition, such as Prysmianโ€™s presence in theย Dow Jones World Index, shows how sustainability remains a key strategic priority.

Inย 2021, Prysmian also launched itsย Climate Change and Social Ambitionย roadmap. Through this plan, the group aims to become a leading technology partner in theย lowโ€‘carbon energy transition, fully decarbonizing its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) byย 2035ย and reachingย netโ€‘zero across the full value chain (Scope 3) by 2050.

Prysmian and NBN Deliver Lower-Impact Cable Design in Australia

Prysmianโ€™s progress also appears in its local work.ย Prysmian Australiaย receivedย NBN Co.โ€™s โ€œProtected Environmentโ€ Award for 2022, which recognizes efforts to reduce environmental impact across theย NBNย broadband network. Prysmian has a long partnership withย NBN Co., locally manufacturing and supplyingย optical ribbon cableย that supports the national network and serving as NBNโ€™sย exclusive copper cable supplier. All of these NBN cables come from Prysmianโ€™sย Dee Why plant in Sydney.

The local Prysmian team worked closely with NBNโ€™s engineering design group to optimize theย 12โ€‘fiber stranded feeder cable. Together, they challenged the existing design and created aย smaller, lighter cableย that still meets all mechanical, environmental and optical requirements. After several rounds of prototyping and testing, the final design delivered:

  • Aย 21% reduction in weight, mainly from lower plastic content.

  • Aย 27% reduction in overall cable size.

  • Aย doubling of cable length per drum, with no change to handling or performance.

Over justย 12 months, these improvements brought notable environmental gains:

  • 129 metric tons less plasticย used.

  • 87 metric tons less timberย (aboutย 1,400 wooden drums) thanks to longer lengths per drum.

  • Aboutย 1,175 metric tons of COโ‚‚ emissions avoided.

  • Fewer logisticsโ€‘related emissions as more thanย 1,400 drumsย no longer required transport.

โ€œWe are delighted that our long-term strategy to manufacture locally, with a commitment to innovation and sustainability, continues to be of significant value to our customers,โ€ saidย Hama Shroff,ย Prysmian Oceania CEO. He stressed that local manufacturing and smart product design both play a key role in cutting the environmental footprint of network infrastructure.
