Prysmian Expands Italyโs Energy Network
Prysmian Groupย secured aย โฌ630 million contractย fromย Terna SpA, Italyโs transmission system operator, to build theย Adriatic Link submarine cable project. The project will connectย Abruzzoย andย Marche, strengthening Italyโs national power grid and supporting its clean energy goals.
Key Details of the Adriatic Link
Theย Adriatic Linkย runsย 250 km, includingย 210 km of submarine cablesย andย 40 km of underground connectionsย linking each landing point to regional substations. Prysmian willย design, manufacture, install,ย andย commissionย theย HVDC interconnection. The link will carryย 1,000 MWย of electricity, improving transmission between Italyโs north and south.
Local Production and Advanced Equipment
Prysmian will produceย submarine cablesย withย XLPE insulationย at its plant inย Arco Felice, Italy. It will also manufactureย underground cablesย withย PโLaser insulationย inย Gron, France. The company has invested heavily in Arco Felice, turning it into aย technology hub for submarine cable systemsย in Europe.
Two specialized vesselsโtheย Leonardo da Vinciย and theย Monna Lisaโwill lay the cables. Installation should finish during theย first half of 2028.
Strengthening Partnerships and Grid Capacity
โThis contract reflects the strong partnership between Terna and Prysmian,โ saidย Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU at Prysmian. He explained that the project usesย stateโofโtheโart Italian cable technologyย and aligns with theย Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).
The new connection will improve Italyโs grid reliability and helpย reduce carbon emissions. It will also reinforce Italyโs growing role as aย Mediterranean power hub.
