Southwire to partner with NKT for underground cable for U.S. project

Southwire NKT CHPE Partnership Supports U.S. Renewable Power

Southwire Company, LLCย has joined forces withย NKTย to supply underground power cables for theย Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) Project. This major energy initiative will deliver clean, renewable electricity from the U.S.-Canadian border to New York. Theย Southwire NKT CHPE partnershipย combines proven cable manufacturing experience with cutting-edge HVDC technology to strengthen Americaโ€™s renewable power network.

Expanding Renewable Infrastructure Across the Northeast

Under this partnership,ย Southwireย will produce a portion of the underground power cables for NKT, which serves as the projectโ€™s turnkey cable supplier and technology owner.

Theย CHPE Projectย spans about 546 km of fully buried high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission cable. It will include both submarine and underground stretches to connect key energy hubs. Southwire will manufacture its share of these cables at itsย Huntersville Plant in North Carolina, where the company continues to expand production capacity for large-scale renewable projects.

Building on Shared Expertise and Innovation

Rich Stinson, President and CEO of Southwire, described the project as an important milestone. โ€œItโ€™s a great time for our industry and an even better time to be at Southwire,โ€ Stinson said. โ€œWeโ€™re proud to partner with NKT and help deliver one of the largest renewable energy projects in the U.S.โ€

Mika Makela, Managing Director forย NKT North America, highlighted the value of combining strengths. โ€œThis award secures vital manufacturing capacity and blends NKTโ€™s HVDC design with Southwireโ€™s production expertise,โ€ he explained. โ€œTogether, we can provide reliable infrastructure that drives the clean energy transition forward.โ€

Delivering Renewable Energy to Over One Million Homes

Once completed, theย Champlain Hudson Power Expressย will supply 1,250 megawatts of renewable hydroelectric energy to Queens, New York. That amount of power can serve more than one million homes.

This project marks a vital step in New Yorkโ€™s sustainability efforts, reducing carbon emissions while meeting growing energy demands. Through theย Southwire NKT CHPE partnership, both companies reaffirm their commitment to innovation and cleaner energy for future generations.
