Sumitomo Supports NeuConnect HVDC Link
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.ย won a contract from theย Prysmian Groupย to supply 150 km of HVDC submarine cable for the NeuConnect Interconnector. The project will link the U.K. and Germany with a 1.4 GW power connection and create a new crossโborder โelectricity highway.โ
Sumitomo will deliver a section of HVDC massโimpregnated cable to Prysmian PowerLink Services Ltd., which holds the main contract with NeuConnect. Overall, the interconnector will use about 725 km of land and subsea cables and will move up to 1.4 GW of power in either direction, enough to serve as many as 1.5 million homes over the project life.
Cable Manufacturing and Project Experience
Sumitomo plans to manufacture the NeuConnect submarine cable at its Osaka Works in Japan. This facility specializes in highโperformance HVDC and subsea cable technology, so it supports demanding longโdistance interconnector projects.
The NeuConnect order represents Sumitomoโs sixth European HVDC power link. Previous projects include MON.ITA (MontenegroโItaly), NEMO (U.K.โBelgium), the AโNord HVDC project in Germany, Kontek (GermanyโDenmark), and Greenlink (IrelandโGreat Britain). This track record shows how the company continues to expand its footprint in European transmission networks.
Advancing NetโZero Through Interconnection
Sumitomo Managing Executive Officer Yasuyuki Shibata notes that the company feels honored to supply cable for NeuConnect, since the link will form part of critical infrastructure that supports netโzero emission goals. The project will help both the U.K. and Germany move more renewable power across borders and balance supply and demand more efficiently.
NeuConnect itself is a privately financed project. International investors such asย Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, and Kansai Electric Power back the development, which underlines growing interest in crossโborder HVDC links that accelerate Europeโs energy transition.
