Sumitomo updates Egypt wire plant project

Japanโ€™s Sumitomo Corporation will build the worldโ€™s largest EV wiring harness factory in Egypt after securing a golden license for a $100 million investment.

Sumitomo Corporationย received Egyptโ€™sย golden licenseย to build the new plant under the freeโ€‘zone system. Authorities describe the facility as the largest global site for electric vehicle wiring harness production, reflecting Egyptโ€™s strategy to attract major industrial projects.

The golden license bundles most permits required to establish and operate the project, so Sumitomo can move faster from planning to execution. As a result, the company gains a streamlined path to construction and longโ€‘term expansion in the country.

The factory will occupy aboutย 150,000 square meters, allowing room for largeโ€‘scale production, storage, and possible future expansion. The site also includes a rawโ€‘material warehouse that will serve as a distribution hub forย North and Middle Africa, improving supply efficiency in nearby markets.

Sumitomo plans to export output from Egypt to global car manufacturers inย Europe and the Middle East, positioning the project as a key node in international EV supply chains. In turn, Egypt benefits from higher exports, new industrial jobs, and deeper integration into global automotive networks.

Theย General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI)ย confirmed the license and highlighted the projectโ€™s importance for Egyptโ€™s automotive development plans. During a recent meeting,ย GAFI CEO Hossam Haibaย and Sumitomo executives reviewed the companyโ€™s expansion roadmap and discussed government support measures.

They focused on incentives, infrastructure, and workforce development to help the factory reach full capacity over time. This cooperation supports Egyptโ€™s goal to become a regional hub for EV components and wiring harness production.
