Taihan Cable USA Wins $70M 230 kV Power Grid Contract in Southern California

Taihan Cable & Solutionโ€™s U.S. subsidiary has won a $70 million 230 kV power grid project in Southern California. The turnkey contract highlights Taihanโ€™s expanding footprint in the U.S. transmission market as utilities accelerate grid modernization and renewable energy integration.

Taihan Cable & Solution (Taihan) announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Taihan USA, has secured a 230 kV extra-high-voltage (EHV) power grid project in the United States valued at approximately 100 billion won, or about $70 million.

Turnkey 230 kV project in Southern California

According to a report from Yonhap News Agency, the contract covers a 230 kV high-voltage AC cable system for a utility in Southern California and will be executed on a full turnkey basis. While Taihan had not yet published a formal press release at the time of reporting, multiple South Korean media outletsโ€”including Asia Economy and Walk into Koreaโ€”confirmed the project scope in the Riverside region.

Asia Economyโ€™s English-language service reported that Taihan will handle system design, cable production, delivery, on-site installation, and commissioning. Yonhap added that Taihan will oversee the full project lifecycle, including planning, manufacturing, installation, and testing.

Long-term focus on the U.S. grid market

Taihan has steadily expanded its presence in the U.S. electric grid market since 2017. That strategy has delivered record annual orders, including approximately $280 million to $300 million in 2022 and an additional $90 million to $100 million in U.S. grid contracts awarded in mid-2024.

An analysis published by The Korea Times projects that U.S. electricity demand will rise from roughly 4,100 terawatt-hours in 2024 to more than 5,000 terawatt-hours by 2030, reinforcing long-term investment in transmission infrastructure.

Technical expertise drives project wins

Taihan stated in multiple reports that it has secured every 500 kV AC project it has pursued in the U.S. The company credits its success to deep experience in technically complex projects, including 320 kV HVDC transmission systems and replacement programs for aging urban power grids.

That portfolio includes numerous 230 kV and 500 kV underground transmission projects supporting large-scale solar and wind developments in California, as well as grid renewal programs in major U.S. cities.

Global backlog supported by HV and offshore projects

According to a Korea Herald report, Taihanโ€™s recent U.S. wins complement a global portfolio of ultra-high-voltage projects in markets such as Singapore, Qatar, and the United Kingdom. These awards have pushed the companyโ€™s total order backlog to approximately $2.5 billion.

โ€œStarting with this early win, we aim to build further momentum,โ€ a Taihan Cable official told Yonhap. โ€œAs U.S. grid modernization and large-scale investment accelerate, we will leverage our local presence to expand projects nationwide and strengthen our market position.โ€

Beyond land-based and underground transmission work, Taihan has also been selected as a preferred or confirmed supplier for inter-array and onshore grid packages tied to offshore wind projects. According to Korea Herald and Offshore Energy, the company is currently building a second submarine cable plant in South Korea to support that expanding business.
