The Wire Association International (WAI) held its annual Clockwinding ceremony, annual meeting, and Mordica Lecture virtually on November 11 due to COVID-19. This format allowed the association to continue its long-standing tradition while adapting to global restrictions. Learn more about WAI at https://www.wirenet.org.
Clockwinding Tradition Continues Virtually
Former WAI President Ron Reed of Lloyd & Bouvier (https://www.lloydandbouvier.com) led the ceremony from WAI headquarters in Madison, Connecticut. He explained the history of the Clockwinding tradition, which honors the gift of a grandfather clock from the U.K. wire industry in recognition of wartime support.
This year, Martin Thacker joined remotely from the U.K. as the official clockwinder. Although he participated virtually, the ceremony maintained its significance and continuity.
Honoring Industry History and Global Connections
During the event, Thacker reflected on the historical ties between the U.S. and U.K. wire industries. He also highlighted his family’s legacy in wire manufacturing and the role of trade organizations in shaping the industry.
The Clockwinding ceremony continues to symbolize international cooperation, shared history, and enduring industry relationships.
Mordica Lecture and Event Access
Following the ceremony, Dr. Gil Baker delivered the Mordica Lecture, expanding on insights published in WAI’s Wire Journal International.
