Clockwinding event celebrates tradition and its evolving role in changing times

The Wire Association International (WAI) Clockwinding Ceremony continued its long-standing tradition with Elizabeth Bonfield representing the United Kingdom at WAI headquarters in Madison, Connecticut. This historic event dates back to 1948 and symbolizes the enduring relationship between the U.S. and U.K. wire industries.

WAI Clockwinding Ceremony Tradition

The WAI Clockwinding Ceremony began on October 20, 1948, when British wire industry representatives presented a grandfather clock to WAI. They honored U.S. support during World War II. Since then, WAI has preserved the clock as a symbol of industry collaboration and history.

2023 Ceremony and Participants

WAI President Kurt Breischaft welcomed Elizabeth Bonfield and her husband to the Madison headquarters. He emphasized the importance of the U.S.–U.K. industry relationship and the meaning behind the ceremony.

Bonfield brings over 20 years of leadership experience in engineering, manufacturing, and construction. She most recently worked with Skills 4 UK. During the ceremony, she reflected on past participants and recognized key contributors, including John Rigby and other industry leaders who helped establish the tradition.

Honoring Industry Legacy

Bonfield highlighted the legacy of past clockwinders and acknowledged those who have passed. She emphasized the importance of maintaining industry traditions while continuing to build global connections.

She then performed the clockwinding ritual, carefully completing the process and ensuring the clock would continue running for another year.

Celebrating Industry Connections

The ceremony concluded with a gathering at the Madison Beach Hotel, where attendees continued discussions about industry collaboration, shared experiences, and strengthened professional relationships.
