The Wire Association International (WAI) will feature Martin Thacker as the British representative for its 2021 Clockwinding ceremony, which will take place during the board of directors meeting on November 17. WAI will post the ceremony online later in the month.
Each year, a representative from the United Kingdom wire industry participates in this long-standing tradition.
Industry Legacy and Background
Martin Thacker brings deep industry roots to the ceremony. His grandfather worked as a wiredrawer in Sheffield, while his father and uncle worked for Markham and Company Limited.
In addition, Thacker serves as a Liveryman of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Tinplate Workers Alias Wireworkers in the City of London.
History of the Clockwinding Tradition
The Clockwinding ceremony began after the U.K. wire industry gifted a grandfather clock to WAI. The gift recognized support provided during World War II.
Since then, a U.K. representative has traveled annually to wind the clock and honor the connection between the two industries.
