ASN to supply cable for expansion of a previously announced Tikal project

Telxius Expands Tikal Subsea Cable to Connect with Mexico

Telxius, a subsidiary ofย Telefรณnica, announced plans to extend itsย Tikal subsea cableย toย Cancรบn, Mexico. This expansion enhances regional connectivity and reinforces Telxiusโ€™ role in developing high-capacity digital infrastructure across the Americas.

Strengthening Connectivity with the Telxius Tikal Subsea Cable Mexico Expansion

Theย Telxius Tikal subsea cable Mexicoย extension will expand the systemโ€™s capacity and reach. Initially announced in partnership withย Amรฉrica Mรณvilย inย January 2023, Tikal connectsย Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, toย Boca Raton, Florida. Telxius will now lead the Cancรบn extension independently, having already activated the related supply contract withย Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN).

The main trunk of the Tikal system will launch with an estimated capacity ofย 380 Tbps, making it one of the highest-performing routes in the Caribbean. It will feature advanced transmission technology to ensure top-tierย security, reliability, and service quality.

Enhancing Latin American Digital Infrastructure

The Tikal cable is scheduled to beย Ready for Service (RFS)ย byย mid-2026. Through this extension, Mexico gains a new high-capacity link that connects seamlessly with Telxiusโ€™s network across Central America and North America. The system also includes an option to extend further south toย Barranquilla, Colombia, advancing regional connectivity and redundancy.

โ€œThis expansion marks an important milestone for our network,โ€ said aย Telxius spokesperson. โ€œAdding Mexico to the Tikal route strengthens our commitment to connecting the main digital data hubs throughout the Americas.โ€

The Telxius Network: Connecting Continents

Telxius operates overย 100,000 km of terrestrial and subsea fiberย and manages several next-generation systems, includingย Marea, Brusa, Dunant, Tannat, Junior, and Mistralย โ€” withย Tikalย soon joining them.

Five of these cables connect Latin America to the global infrastructure, while two link data hubs across the Atlantic. Together, they create aย multi-terabit next-generation networkย that supports the growing demand for bandwidth, cloud access, and digital transformation worldwide.
