Construction of Japan-Guam-Australia Cable System (JGA) has commenced

Japan Guam Australia Cable System Construction Begins

The Japan Guam Australia cable system project has officially started construction, marking a major step in global connectivity. A consortium that includes RTI ConnectivityAARNet, and Google, along with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and NEC Corporation, leads the development.

High-Capacity Subsea Network Design

The JGA cable system will span 9,500 km and deliver more than 36 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity. The consortium expects to complete the project by the fourth quarter of 2019.

This high-capacity system will support growing data demand and strengthen international communication networks.

Dual-Segment Structure Enhances Connectivity

The project includes two key segments. First, JGA South (JGA-S) will connect Sydney, Australia to Guam and includes partners such as AARNet, Google, and RTI-C.

Next, JGA North (JGA-N) will link Japan to Guam. RTI-C serves as the sole purchaser for this segment. Both systems will connect at Guam’s landing station, improving network integration.

Strengthening Global Network Infrastructure

The Japan Guam Australia cable system will improve network redundancy and ensure more reliable communications. In addition, it will expand connectivity between Japan, Australia, Asia, and the United States.

This system also introduces critical north-south connectivity across the Pacific. As a result, it complements existing east-west routes and improves global data flow.

Supporting Future Cable Investments

The project builds on previous initiatives supported by the Japan ICT Fund and reinforces ongoing investment in subsea infrastructure. Companies involved plan to expand similar projects to meet future connectivity needs.
