NEC to Build Record-Breaking Submarine Cable Across Pacific
The NEC submarine cable project marks a major step in global connectivity as NEC Corporation partners with leading technology companies to deliver a 16,000-km optical submarine cable system. This initiative strengthens data infrastructure between Asia and North America while supporting rising demand for high-speed connectivity.
NEC Submarine Cable Project Connects Global Tech Hubs
NEC Corporation has signed an agreement with the Bay to Bay Express (BtoBE) consortium, which includes China Mobile International, Facebook, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Under this agreement, NEC will design and build a high-performance submarine cable linking Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States.
This system will span nearly 16,000 kilometers, making it one of the longest submarine cables without regeneration. NEC will serve as the turnkey system supplier, delivering advanced infrastructure to support global data traffic.
High-Capacity and Low-Latency Network Performance
The BtoBE cable system will include multiple optical fiber pairs to enable high-capacity data transmission across the Pacific Ocean. It will also achieve round-trip latency of less than 130 milliseconds, ensuring fast and reliable connectivity.
Once operational, the system will carry at least 18 terabits per second (Tbps) per fiber pair. As a result, it will significantly enhance communications between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Singapore.
Advanced Technology and Network Reliability
NEC will deploy advanced optical submarine transmission equipment to improve network redundancy, flexibility, and reliability. In addition, the cable will land at three key locations across the Pacific, ensuring strong and diverse connectivity routes.
This project will complement existing Asia-Pacific submarine cable networks while supporting continued digital growth across global markets.
