Boosting Efficiency in Japan’s Wire Rod Production

Danieli has delivered a custom shiftable roughing mill to Nippon Steel Corporation for its Kamaishi plant in Japan. The advanced system not only enhances rolling precision but also improves operational flexibility and productivity. Moreover, its compact layout ensures efficient use of plant space.

High-Performance System for Precision Rolling

According to Danieli, the new mill enables twist-free rolling of 130–168 mm billets at a capacity of 130 tons per hour. As a result, Nippon Steel can achieve more consistent output while maintaining high production speeds. The shiftable stands also allow faster billet charging and smoother transitions between product sizes.

Additionally, the billets produced feed directly into the Kamaishi facility’s wire rod production line, ensuring a continuous and efficient manufacturing process

Optimized Danieli Roughing Mill Nippon Steel Kamaishi Introduces Advanced Equipment Design for Reliable Output

The Kamaishi facility produces various steel wire rod grades, including mild, low-alloy, spring, special melt, and bearing steel.

Key supplied equipment includes:

• Two mono-groove vertical and horizontal housingless stands, each moved by electric actuators.
• A three-strand wire rod mill fed alternately with 122 mm square bars in diamond configuration.
• An automated roll cartridge extraction system connected to a roll shop equipped with a Danieli roll-changing robot and electric roll tilter.
• A three-strand pinch roll, spare cartridge units, and steel grooved rolls with roller guides.

This project builds on Danieli’s long partnership with Nippon Steel. The new roughing mill supports higher productivity, flexible billet rolling, and reduced maintenance downtime.
