Greek company wins order to supply land and sea cables for wind farm

Hollandse Kust South Grid Connection Project Advances Offshore Wind Energy

The Hollandse Kust South grid connection project marks a major step in expanding offshore wind energy in the Netherlands. Hellenic Cables and its marine contractor partner Van Oord secured a contract from TenneT to deliver and install critical cable infrastructure. Cable Design, Manufacturing, and Installation Scope

Hellenic Cables will design and manufacture 220 kV submarine and land cables for the project. In addition, Van Oord will handle the cable-laying operations.

The 700 MW grid connection will transmit offshore wind energy directly to electricity users in the Netherlands. The 42 km cable route will connect the offshore Alpha substation to the onshore Maasvlakte high-voltage station in Rotterdam. As a result, the project will strengthen grid reliability and renewable energy integration.

Alpha and Beta Project Integration

The partners will also support the Hollandse Kust (South) Beta project. This phase includes the design, supply, and installation of 66 kV inter-array marine cables between the Alpha and Beta platforms.

The Alpha grid connection is scheduled for completion in 2021, while the Beta connection will follow in 2022. Altogether, Hellenic Cables’ share of both projects reaches approximately €105 million.

Supporting Europe’s Renewable Energy Goals

The Hollandse Kust South grid connection project supports the Netherlands’ transition to sustainable electricity production. Moreover, it aligns with national energy targets and offshore wind expansion plans.

TenneT CEO Manon van Beek emphasized the importance of the project. She noted that it represents another key step toward increasing renewable energy generation at sea.
