JDR to supply 100 km of cables for world’s largest offshore wind farm

JDR Wins Contract for Hornsea Project Two Offshore Wind Farm

JDR Cable Systems (JDR) has secured a multi-million pound contract to supply inter-array cables for Ørsted’s Hornsea Project Two. This project represents a major step forward for offshore wind development in the U.K.

JDR Hornsea Project Two Cable Contract Overview

The JDR Hornsea Project Two cable contract supports one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects. Once operational in 2022, the 1.4 GW wind farm will power more than 1.3 million homes.

In addition, JDR—part of the TFKable Group—will manufacture 100 kilometers of inter-array cables at its Hartlepool facility.

Cable Technology and Project Scope

These inter-array cables will connect turbines across the wind farm. They will also transfer electricity to an offshore substation, where the system increases voltage for transmission to shore.

Importantly, Ørsted will use 66 kV array cables for the first time in a U.K. project. Previously, the company relied on 33 kV systems. As a result, the upgraded technology will reduce energy loss and improve efficiency.

Supporting Offshore Wind Innovation

Ørsted continues to scale its offshore wind projects. As projects grow larger and move farther offshore, developers require more advanced solutions.

For example, this project builds on earlier developments such as Hornsea Project One and the Race Bank offshore wind farm. Consequently, the company continues to refine both technology and cost efficiency.

Cost Efficiency and Industry Impact

JDR CEO Richard Turner highlighted the project’s economic impact. He noted that Hornsea Project Two will deliver power at one of the lowest costs in the U.K. offshore wind sector.

Overall, the project demonstrates ongoing innovation in renewable energy. It also reinforces the U.K.’s position as a leader in offshore wind development.
