Leoni, a global provider of energy and data management solutions in the automotive sector, plans to extend its production capacities in Morocco.

A press release said that the German company will build an additional plant for wiring systems, in Agadir, that will focus on the commercial vehicles segment. The plant should provide 3,000 new jobs. The company recently signed agreements for several investment projects with Moroccan representatives.

In Agadir, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch presided over the signing ceremony of two memoranda of understanding and a framework agreement for the implementation of six investment projects. Leoni will enlarge its existing nine plants in the Casablanca-Settat region as well as establish a new facility in Agadir, thus creating more than 7,000 new jobs by 2027. The additional wiring systems plant in the Agadir industrial acceleration zone will provide 3,000 jobs in administration, engineering and production.

“I am very pleased about the agreement between our company and the Moroccan government,” said Ingo Spengler, Leoni’s COO and a member of the Executive Board. “Leoni will seize the opportunity to expand its footprint in the county, which provides favorable conditions in terms of availability of skilled workers, competitiveness and logistics. The state of Morocco, in return, is developing the industrial sector being the main pillar of the national economy.”

The new plant will specialize in producing wiring systems for the Commercial Vehicles segment, one of the growth fields of the company’s Wiring Systems Division. Leoni is supplying a growing number of truck and engine manufacturers with harnesses and associated components as well as off-road sector including agricultural, construction and industrial vehicles.

Germany’s Kocks Group reports that Yantai Walsin Stainless Steel Co., Ltd., has begun manufacturing with its new RSB® 370++/4 mill whose capacity will be used for multiple products and applications and as a feeder for a wire rod line.

A press release said that the new sizing block represents the latest advancement in long product production technology and is designed to deliver superior surface quality and dimensional accuracy while reducing operating costs over the entire mill line.

Production has begun at Yantai Walsin, which is a subsidiary of Walsin Lihwa, a Taiwanese manufacturer of specialty steel. The corporation has a long customer history, having installed the very first Kocks Reducing & Sizing Block in 1991, as well as a RSB 500 Intermediate Block and a recently installed RB 500++/4 at the company’s rolling mill in Tainan, Taiwan.

The new Kocks RSB 370++/4 sizing block for Yantai Walsin has four 3-roll stand positions for optimal deformation behavior and yield strength and is part of a newly built rolling mill for SBQ products in Yantai, Shandong province. It is positioned after 20 stands in H/V arrangement. The sizing block from Kocks finishes round dimensions from 18 to 100 mm, hexagonal dimensions from 18 to 80 mm and feeders for the wire rod line.

In addition to the machine, Kocks supplied the roll-shop equipment and its proprietary software solutions. The advanced block enables a new level of efficient production at Walsin Yantai. The RSB is equipped with the measuring gauge 4D Eagle® and connected to Kocks’ Size Control System (SCS®) which allows real-time adjustments of the operating parameters of the rolling block. This ensures transparent process monitoring and the quickest possible adjustments whenever necessary.

Nexans announced an expansion of its presence in the offshore wind and interconnection market by adding a third cable laying vessel to its fleet in 2026.

A press release said the new ship will build on the cutting-edge technology of Nexans’ flagship vessel, the Nexans Aurora. The new ship will have an improved design, comfort and capabilities. Equipped with three turntables, it will have 13,500-metric ton loading capacity, and host subsea tooling such as jetting and ploughing tools.

The vessel will be capable of laying up to four cables simultaneously to meet specific customer requirements, especially on large-scale projects. It will have an advanced hybrid power system and be capable of running on a biodiesel mix.

“This new vessel will be the most technologically advanced cable layer ever deployed” said Nexans COO and Senior Vice President Vincent Dessale. “Fitted with a range of high-tech cable installation and burial equipment, it will enhance the capabilities of our subsea cable operations to tackle projects on an unprecedented scale. The Prysmian Group is investing approximately €120 million in its strategic plant in Pikkala, Finland, that produces high-tech cables for land and submarine interconnections and for both onshore and offshore wind farms all over the world.

A press release said that the investment—in addition to the €100 million already provided in 2022—is aimed at further increasing the production capacity of the 525 kV HVDC submarine cable systems, supporting the growing market demand driven by the need to develop and upgrade power transmission grids for the energy transition. It calls for new Vertical Continuous Vulcanization (VCV) lines that will more than double the Pikkala plant’s existing production capacity of 525 kV extruded submarine cables and 400 kV AC cables by 2026.

“The investment is part of the around €500 million capex per year that the Group is implementing to support the energy transition, electrification and digitalization processes, which require the upgrade of power grids and telecom networks,” said Prysmian Group COO Massimo Battaini. He noted that the massive investment plan was made possible thanks to the Group’s financial solidity and proven cash generation capability.

The release said that the global power transmission cable market is expected to grow to €15 billion by 2030 from around €8 billion reported in 2022.

“Our global strategy is to rely on three state-of-the-art power transmission cable hubs: one in Northern Europe, thanks to the increasing investments in the Pikkala plant in Finland, another one in the Mediterranean area, where we are investing around €100 million in the existing plant in Arco Felice, Italy, and the third one is the completely new submarine cable plant in the U.S., Massachusetts, serving the very high potential North American market,” said EVP Projects BU Hakan Ozmen. “This will allow us to support our customers’ needs, while also continuing to pursue our own climate change commitments,” commented Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU.

The release said that Prysmian’s 525 kV submarine cable technology is specifically designed to support the energy transition thanks to its key features that enable a massive increase in transmission capacity to 2 GW, which is more than double the value achieved with the 320 kV DC systems currently in service.

“This investment confirms the strategic importance of the Pikkala plant, which is already considered the Group’s energy transition flagship factory,” said Prysmian Group Finland CEO Ferdinando Quartuccio. “Thanks to its switch to green energy sources, this plant is to date the first cable plant in the world to have achieved the net-zero goal.”

NEC Corp. has signed a contract with the consortium behind the East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS) to construct, supply, and install a 2,250 km submarine cable network that will connect four islands within the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Kiribati and Nauru.

Per multiple media reports, the undersea cable—estimated to cost US$95 million—will connect the state of Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia, Tarawa in Kiribati and Nauru to the existing cable landing point located in Pohnpei in Micronesia. The cable consortium comprises FSM Telecommunications Cable Corp. (FSMTCC) in the FSM, BwebwerikiNet Ltd. of the Republic of Kiribati, and Nauru Fibre Cable Corp. of the Republic of Nauru.

The governments of Australia, Japan, and the U.S. will provide grant funding for the submarine cable project. The goal is to connect the East Micronesia island nations to improve networks in the Indo-Pacific region where China is increasingly expanding its influence. In a joint statement, the parties said the next steps involve a final survey and design and manufacturing of the cable. The project is scheduled for completion in 2025.

The announcement came a few weeks after leaders of the Quad, a security alliance of Japan, the United States, Australia and India, emphasized the importance of undersea cables as a critical component of communications infrastructure and the foundation for internet connectivity.“Secure and resilient digital connectivity has never been more important,” said a statement from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. “The United States is delighted to be part of this project bringing our region closer together.”

The cable will connect more than 100,000 people across the three Pacific countries, according to Kazuya Endo, director general of the international cooperation bureau at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. 

“Kosrae is the only state in FSM that remains without a submarine cable connection,” said Gordon Segal, CEO of FSMTCC and chairman of the EMCS management committee. “This project will support equal access to digital connectivity across all four states of FSM and greatly enhance our ability to access information and essential services. We thank all our project partners for their support and collaboration.”

“With the recent progress of digitalization, internet connectivity and access to digital technologies ... it is a great honor that the NEC Group can use its many years of experience in
optical submarine cable technology to contribute to the access to information and communications for residents, businesses, and governments of Pacific Island countries,” said Atsushi Kuwahara, managing director of the Submarine Network Division at NEC.

LS Cable & System (LS C&S) announced that it has been selected as the preferred bidder for subsea cables for the Shinanwui (Sinan Ui) offshore wind farm project that will be the largest such one in South Korea.

Per multiple reports, including the Korea Herald and offshorewind.bz, LS C&S will supply subsea cables for the country’s 400 MW Shinanwui offshore wind project being developed by Hanwha Engineering & Construction (HEC). The Sinan Ui wind farm will be built in the southeastern sea area of the Ui-Do island, in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province. It is projected that the farm will produce more than three times the wind energy currently produced by all Korean offshore wind power farms each year.

The contract for LS Cable & System, to be negotiated, is expected to be worth about US$79 million. LS C&S will deliver all the required subsea cables necessary for the construction of the wind farm and its connection to land in the second half of 2025, with the offshore wind project scheduled to be completed in 2026.

An official from LS Cable & System said in one of the reports that foreign companies such as those from China had taken over the domestic solar power market and that they were also targeting the South Korean offshore wind power market. They noted that the contract was important as it protects the domestic industrial ecosystem.

“Foreign companies, such as Chinese companies, have dominated the domestic solar market and are foraying into the (domestic) offshore wind energy market as well,” an LS C&S official said. “This cooperation is significant in that Hanwha Corp. E&C, the leader of the offshore wind energy business, and a submarine communication cable company cooperate to protect the domestic industry ecosystem.”

LS C&S, which last year launched South Korea’s first subsea power cable laying vessel, has won several cable supply contracts in both Asia and Europe the past year.

Manner Polymers announced that it is investing $54 million to open a new manufacturing facility in Mount Vernon, Illinois, that will be powered by solar energy generated on-site and create 60 new jobs.

A press release said that the facility has been designed to provide the highest levels of product consistency coupled with low cost and unparalleled supply reliability, powered by a 15-acre solar field located on site. Production is expected to commence in the fall of 2025. Once in full operation, the new plant will increase the company’s production capacity by 100 million pounds, further strengthening its domestic supply chain.

“Not only will we incorporate best in class manufacturing technology, but we will also produce substantially all of the electricity that we use,” said Manner Polymers CEO Raj Bhargava. “Our objective is to build the lowest-cost, highest-quality, most environmentally sustainable flexible PVC compounding plant in the world. This will be a transformational plant. It will have industry-leading capabilities coupled with a clean energy footprint.”

Among those who attended the announcement was Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who lauded the decision. “I couldn’t be prouder that Manner Polymers has selected Illinois for their state-of-the-art 80,000 square foot, 100% solar-powered facility.”

Manner Polymers selected Illinois to locate its solar-powered facility after considering locations in Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Manner Polymers, based in McKinney, Texas, notes that the company has increased its footprint to become one of the largest flexible PVC compounders in North America since its inception in California more than 60 years ago. The business manufactures custom, specialty and commodity compounds to support customers in a broad range of markets, including building and construction, industrial and commercial, automotive and transportation, consumer products, appliance and electric, agriculture, telecommunications and medical.

As part of its ongoing modernization efforts, Southwire announced an expansion at its campus in Florence, Alabama, that is designed to increase production capacity at the plant it acquired from Essex in 2006.

A press release said that the existing 300,000-sq-ft plant, which produces commercial and residential building wire, will more than double in size. The expansion plans call for some 340,000 sq feet of added space for new equipment and the creation of approximately 120 jobs. Construction is expected to begin this quarter and should be completed in 2025.
The investments and upgrades will effectively streamline Southwire’s commercial and residential building wire efforts, complement existing products and emphasize the facility’s culture and labor pool. The project will also include renovating the existing building to enhance the team member experience, including locker rooms, training space and an outdoor picnic and activity area.

“Southwire is committed to remain generationally sustainable for the next 100 years and beyond and be an employer of choice, and we look forward to the growth opportunities that this expansion will bring to our company,” said Norman Adkins, president of wire and cable and COO.

South Korea’s LS Cable & System (LS C&S) reported that it has signed an agreement to supply high-voltage submarine cable to Ørsted for renewable energy projects in Taiwan, where it notes that it has done extremely well.

A press release said that LS C&S will supply the cable for Denmark’s Ørsted—which it has partnered successfully with—for use in its Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind projects in Taiwan. Located 35 to 60 km from the Changhua coast in western Taiwan, it will be among the largest offshore wind farms in the Asia-Pacific region when it is completed at the end of 2025, able to generate 920 MW of renewable energy.

With the latest order, LS C&S has supplier rights for all eight projects of the Taiwan’s Phase 1 Offshore Windfarm Construction Projects. The accumulated amount of orders since 2019 are worth approximately 1 trillion won (about $776 million).

Taiwan is planning to complete the construction of offshore wind farms with total output of 5.5 GW through the first phase of the project by 2025 and will build additional offshore wind farms for an additional output of 15 GW by 2035. “We expect additional orders to be placed from Taiwan and estimate that the submarine cable market will be worth around 3 trillion won (about $2.328 billion),” an LS C&S spokesperson said.

The release said that LS C&S expects to see further positive results from its relationship with South Korea’s KT Submarine. Last December, LS C&S paid about $19.3 million to acquire 16% of the share of KT Submarine, an underwater construction firm that provides installation and repair services for submarine cable.

LS C&S notes it also has a call option that it can exercise that would enable it to be the largest shareholder in the company. Further, there are only about five companies in the world capable of both submarine cable manufacturing and construction, and LS C&S is the only company in Korea to be capable of such services.

As part of $73 million in investments, Superior Essex Communications plans to expand its plant in Brownwood, Texas, by 90,000 sq ft to help meet strong global demand for OSP fiber optic cables, drop fiber and hybrid cables.

A press release said that the additional space will expand the site to more than 500,000 total sq ft of production space. The initiative is expected to create 170 new jobs, and some existing positions will be switched from manufacturing legacy OSP copper cable to optical fiber cables.

The investment will include manufacturing equipment and incorporate green building practices—such as Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting and the use of repurposed equipment—and explore the use of solar and battery power sources for the plant.

“The Brownwood plant improvements are not only an investment in our company, but also an investment in U.S. manufacturing and in communities across America,” said Superior Essex Communications President Brad Johnson. “This expansion will create manufacturing jobs right here in America, which will bring more employment opportunities to the Brownwood
region and boost production of American-made broadband products.”

JDR Cable Systems (JDR), part of the TFK Group, has won a contract to supply, test and terminate the 66 kV dynamic inter-array cables (IAC) for independent renewable energy producer Qair’s floating offshore wind Eolmed pre-commercial 30 MW project.

A press release said that the Eolmed project is located in the south of France, 18 km off the coast of Gruissan and Port-La Nouvelle in the Occitanie region. It will connect the wind project to the French Electricity Transmission Network (RTE), providing approximately 100 million kWh per year of power. The site will have three wind turbines anchored to the seabed in a water depth of some 60 meters.

JDR will manufacture the 66 kV dynamic cables at TFK’s Bydgoszcz plant in Poland, with final assembly and testing at JDR’s U.K. plant in Hartlepool. The cabling is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2024.

JDR Sales Director John Price noted that the company recently worked on Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion’s floating wind project. That experience is helpful as projects continue to involve deeper water depths that require more complete planning analysis.

The contract stems from France’s aim to have 40 GW of offshore wind capacity in operation by 2050. The release said there are some 50 projects to meet that goal, and that Qair was preselected for four of the first eight tenders.

Organizers report that the recent first staging of the wire and Tube Eurasia trade fairs, held within the framework of the two established Turkish trade fairs Wire TECH Istanbul and Tube & Steel Istanbul, was a great success. Wire TECH Istanbul and Tube & Steel Istanbul 2023 were organized by Tüyap, a leading Turkish trade fair organizer and venue operator, while Messe Düsseldorf was in charge of wire and Tube Eurasia 2023.

A press release said that 210 exhibitors participated over 8,000 sq m of net exhibit space in the four events in Istanbul. More than 10,000 visitors from Turkey and neighboring countries came to the Tüyap Fair Convention and Congress Center to learn about innovations and trends in the wire, cable, tube and pipe industries.

“A promising start to the premiere in Istanbul. A positively charged atmosphere in the exhibition halls right from the start - that makes you want more. The four days of the trade fair in Istanbul have shown that Turkey is a supra-regional hub for the wire, cable, tube and pipe industries,” said Bernd Jablonowski, executive director of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH.
With just five months preparation, the Messe Düsseldorf team and Tüyap succeeded in organizing a compact industry platform for Turkey and the surrounding regions which reflects the sectors’ innovation strength.

Starting in 2025, wire and Tube Eurasia will be held every two years as independent trade fairs at the Istanbul location. From Turkey, there are short trade routes to the neighboring countries and Asia, which means that the most important target countries can be reached.
