The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Barium

Element, chemical symbol Ba. This element is used in coating compounds to activate the filament wires in valves, etc., so as to achieve efficient electron emission.

Barrel

A cylindrical extruder housing in which the screw rotates.

Barrel Failure

The collapse of a spool barrel from the cumulative compressive stress of the wound wire. It is often the cause of deformation in the wire known as “dog-legs.”

Barrel Heater

The electrical resistance or induction heaters mounted on or around the barrel.

Barrel Heating Zone

A portion of the barrel length having independent temperature control.

Barrel Jacket

A jacket surrounding the outside of the barrel for circulation of a heat transfer medium.

Barrel Plating

Electroplating articles by placing them in a rotating container provided with suitable negative contacts; the container may be a complete unit provided with solution and anodes or it may be perforated and immersed in an electroplating tank, and finally a swilling vat.

Barrel Spring

A helical spring shaped like a barrel. The smaller end coils facilitating the anchoring of the spring, while the larger center coils provide a softer spring. Used in pocket-type spring interior mattresses.

Barrel Zone Temperature

The metal temperature of a given section of the barrel of an extruder.

Barrel-Packed

Method of coiling into a fiber drum for shipment. It has wide application where large volumes of wire are used with automatic feed systems. Also referred to as drum packing.

Barrier

A partition, such as an insulating board to separate bus bars of opposite voltages.

Barrier Screw

A type of extrusion screw that forces the molten plastic material to move between a flight on the screw and the barrel of the extruder before advancing to the head of the extruder. The barrier improves material mixing.

Base Ambient Temperature

The temperature of a cable group when there is no load on any cable that is part of the group or of the duct bank containing the group.

Base Film

The original form in which a film, such as polyester, exists prior to coating. One example of a base coat is the initial magnet wire coating placed on the surface of the electrical conductor.

Base Load

The minimum load over a period of time.

Base Price

The price of a base material before it undergoes processing.

Base Size

Also known as common draw size. 1) The intermediate size in which wire is annealed or patented before final drawing. 2) For drawn galvanized or drawn tinned wire, the size in which it is galvanized or tinned. 3) The term is also used for a finished product to denote the range of sizes sold at minimum prices.

Base Stripe

See Tracer Stripe.

Baseband

In data transmission, the use of a dedicated end-to-end connection to carry a single channel only.

Baseband Signaling

Transmission of a digital or analog signal at its original frequencies, i.e., a signal in its original form, not changed by modulation.
