Bases

Compounds that give off hydroxide ions in water solutions. Owing to the hydroxide ions the bases have alkaline reactions. Their pH values are above 7. Typical basic solutions include sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, ammonia and alkaline degreasing agents. When acids and bases are brought together, a neutralization occurs. See Basic Material.
