The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Drawing

See Wiredrawing.

Drawing Compound

A substance (lubricant) applied to prevent pickup and scoring during drawing or pressing operations by preventing metal-to-metal contact of the work and die.

Drawing Force

The amount of force required for drawing product through a restriction such as a die. The drawing force is a function of reduction, cone angle, back tension and friction. The three components of a drawing force are the internal power of deformation, the redundant power of deformation and the power needed to overcome friction losses.

Drawing Quality

Flat-rolled products produced from either deep drawing rimmed steel or extra-deep drawing aluminum-killed steels. Special rolling and processing operations aid in producing a product that can stand extreme pressing, drawing or forming, etc., without creating defects.

Drawing, Block Diagram

A simplified drawing of a system showing major items as blocks; normally used to show how the system works and the relationship between major items.

Drawing, Cold

See Cold Drawing.

Drawing, Hot

Pulling material, such as tungsten and molybdenum wire, that has been heated before entering the die.

Drawing, Plot or Layout

A physical representation that depicts the “floor plan.”

Drawing, Wiring Diagram

A physical representation that depicts how devices are electrically interconnected.

Drawn Edges

Finished edges, the final contours of which are produced by drawing through a die. The edge contours most commonly used are square corners, rounded corners, rounded edge and full rounded edge.

Drawn Finish

The finish obtained on wire, drawn rod and tube as well as bar and strip by drawing through a die, resulting in a relatively smooth and bright appearance.

Drawn Flat Product

A flat product that has been brought to its final dimensions by being drawn through a die. It can be furnished in flat straight lengths, on spools or in rolls. The edges may be square or of other contours. Types: Drawn bar, drawn flat wire, drawn strip.

Drawn Flat Wire

A flat product obtained from wire, brought to final dimensions by drawing through a die or by rolling, and furnished in flat straight lengths, in coils, or on spools, reels or drums.

Drawn Product

A product formed by pulling the material through a die.

Drawn Shape

Any drawn product other than round.

Drawn Wire Test

A test to evaluate the brittleness of a drawn product. Drawn wire is wrapped around its own diameter in a spiral form, unwrapping it and rewrapping it. The resulting spiral is then compared to a quality rating demerit chart that may reveal micro-cracking and other surface problems.

Drawn-In-Scratches

Scratches that occur during multiple stages that are subsequently drawn over, which makes the scratches relatively smooth to the touch.

Drawn-Inclusion

Hard foreign particles that are drawn into the surface of a soft product. Foreign inclusions are rolled in or forced into the product during the deformation process. They are usually oxides of the product or steel inclusions and could cause wire breaks.

DRC

Designation for Double Rayon Covered.

Dressing

A method of re-casting wire that does not have the specified cast and/or helix. The correction can be made by either the use of straightening rolls, running the wire between the pegs, or using a rotary arbor similar to those used in a straighten-and-cut machine.
