Deoxidize

The removal of oxygen from a batch of molten metal. In steel, oxygen is present as iron oxide, which is dissolved in the steel and can be removed by adding a deoxidizing agent such as manganese, silicon or aluminum. Deoxidation is usually done to help prevent gas porosity and oxygen from combining with the base metal and causing harmful effects on properties.
