The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

MPP

Designation for multipurpose plenum cable.

MPR

Designation for multipurpose riser cable.

MPX

Designation for multiplexer. See Multiplex.

MRFR

Designation for moisture-resistant, flame-retardant finish.

MT

Designation for machine tool wire used for internal wiring of appliances or tools. Solid or stranded conductor with thermoplastic insulations.

MTW

Designation for thermoplastic insulated machine tool wire with operating temperatures of 60°C in wet locations and 90°C in dry locations.

Muffle

A refractory container or inner portion of a furnace, which contains the charge, and which is heated from the outside.

Mullion Heater Wire

The type of wire wrapped around a core for heater elements. Also referred to as Radiant Heater Wire and Resistance Heater Wire.

Multi-Conductor

Two or more conductors within a single cable complex.

Multi-Conductor Cable

A cable consisting of two or more conductors, either cabled or laid in a flat parallel construction, with or without a common overall covering.

Multimedia Cable

A single communication cable used for the transmission of audio, data and video signals.

Multiple Conductor Concentric Cable

A cable composed of an insulated central conductor with one or more conductors laid over it concentrically and insulated from one another.

Multiple Lengths

Lengths of integral multiples of a base length, with suitable allowance for cutting if and as specified. Several different multiples of the base length may be included in any lot, at the mills’ discretion.

Multiple Twin Cable

A type of four-wire or quadded telephone cable made by twisting together two twisted pairs. Unlike star quad cables, multiple twin types can be used to provide a third “phantom” circuit by connecting across parts of wires on a crowded network. Star quad type cables offer a lower pair capacitance and can therefore provide up to 50 percent more physical circuits of the same capacitance in a given cable size.

Multiplex

To transmit two or more signals over the same cable pair such that the messages can be recovered individually.

Multiwire Drawing System

See Wiredrawing, Multiwire System.

Muriatic Acid

An alternative name for hydrochloric acid.

Music Spring Wire

Wire made from high-carbon (.70-1.0) cold-drawn steel with high tensile strength. This wire is manufactured for the production of springs subject to high stress, and or requiring good fatigue properties. Historically, the wire is patented and cold drawn to its finish size. The wire must pass rigorous testing to be classified as music spring wire. Note: the term reportedly came about when a spring manufacturer that had good results using piano wire asked for more of that “music spring wire.”

Musical Instrument Wire

This wire is drawn with a bright lustrous, smooth, hot-dipped tin finish. It is used to make strings for musical instruments such as guitars, mandolin, banjos, etc. It is made from the highest quality high-carbon steel. The manufacturing and heat-treating processes are closely controlled to produce material with the required tone, high tensile strength and durability. The material has two shapes; hexagon, used for the core of the wound string; and round, used for plain strings.

Mutual Capacitance

The capacitance between two conductors when all other conductors, including the shield, are short-circuited to ground.
