Extrusion speed was created by Archived Forum Admin
Dear friends

well I am facing problems in finding the optimal speed for extrusion lines. Is there any reference or equation able to do that? Also what is the relation between the rotational and linear speed?

what are the major factors affecting extrusion speed?

Thanks.

Hello there,

Yours is a very straightforward question resulting in an extremely complicated technical answer. Process engineers and polymer scientists have spent lifetimes determining the answers to your question. As a result processing performance of the various polymers and products is considered proprietary information by wire and cable manufacturers and is not handed out freely. This then leaves you extrusion consultants, polymer manufacturers and extruder manufacturers.

Davis Standard LLc. in Pawcatuk, Connecticut is planning a basic extrusion seminar on April 01 and 02, and October 15 and 16, 2008 . You can register on-line for it here: www.davis-standard.com/public_html/contactinfo/seminar-reg.html or get the printable pdf version here: www.davis-standard.com/brochures/General...aining%20Seminar.pdf It is 750.00 per person with a discount of 10% on each if 3 or more people come from one company. Travel costs, room reservations, other charges and some meals are your responsibility.

You will also see on the printable pdf version that it can be given at your location for a much higher fee with certain requirements beforehand.

I am not expert in extrusion, moreover it is not clear ‘extrusion of what’ you mention in your post.

My answer below is for extrusion of layer of plastic over power cables:
1. Optimal speed depends a)machine constraint, ie maximum screw rotations per minute/ linear speed restriction b)surface finish c)screw motor current d)extrusion melt pressure/temperature.. etc
2. Equation between linear speed & rotational speed of extruder;
Linear Speed = (grams per rotation of screw)* (rotational speed)/ (grams per meter of the layer)

hi all,
it depends on polymers,screw design,temperature,pressure etc.you can find some data in www.extrudertimes.com
