Prysmian Secures Kincardine Floating Offshore Wind Farm Cable Contract
Prysmian Group has won a contract from Cobra Wind International Ltd. to supply the cable system for the Kincardine Floating Offshore Wind Farm in the United Kingdom. This Prysmian Kincardine floating offshore wind cable project marks the company’s first involvement in a floating wind farm development.
Prysmian Kincardine Floating Offshore Wind Cable Project Details
To begin with, Prysmian (https://www.prysmiangroup.com) will design and deliver export cables, inter-array cables, and related accessories. These components will connect the floating turbines to the U.K. mainland power grid.
The wind farm sits approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Aberdeen, creating a key link between offshore renewable generation and onshore infrastructure.
Advanced Cable Design for Floating Turbines
Each export cable will cover a 17-kilometer route. In addition, Prysmian will use a combination of static and dynamic cable sections to connect the floating turbines.
The system includes 33 kV three-core submarine cables with EPR insulation. The static sections will feature single-wire armoring, while the dynamic sections will use double-wire armoring to handle movement from floating structures.
Prysmian will manufacture the cables at its facilities in Vilanova, Spain, and Drammen, Norway.
Phased Development of Kincardine Wind Farm
The Kincardine project will roll out in two stages. First, developers will install a 2 MW turbine, using a Vestas V80 model (https://www.vestas.com). This turbine features a 106-meter tip height and an 80-meter rotor diameter.
Next, the second phase will add six turbines, each with capacity of up to 8.4 MW, significantly increasing total output.
Supporting the Future of Floating Wind Energy
Furthermore, installation will take place during 2018 and 2019, supporting the expansion of floating offshore wind technology.
