Mica Tape was created by Archived Forum Admin
Can we make fire resistance cable able to pass BS 6387 CWZ with one mica tape only or we have to use two mica tape ?

In addition what is difference in performance between single & double coated mica tape ? Is it obvious or not ?

Last question what is difference between Muscovite and Phlogopite?

thanks in advance

Replied by Archived Forum Admin on topic Re: Mica Tape
Hello again M. Mansour

As I understand it:

- Mica paper (fire resistance up to 700C) bonded to supporting material of non-alkaline fiberglass cloth (PE or XLPE Tape, PVC tape or other high temperature polymer tape), impregnated with high temperature resistant silicon resin. Double sided tape often means that there is an fiber glass cloth on each side of the mica paper.

The use of two standard mica tapes in lieu of a single mica tape will slow the heat transfer down but the standard mica tapes will still fail at 950°C to 1000°C soak temperature after three hours. You will have to do the experiments. Please let us know! The F-Mica tapes will fail at 1000°C to 1200°C soak temperature after three hours

- Phlogopite is a yellow, greenish, or reddish-brown member of the mica family of phyllosilicates. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlogopite
- Muscovite is also known as common mica, isinglass, or potash mica. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscovite.
Muscovite mica [KAL2(ALSi3O10)(OH)2] and Phlogopite mica [KMg3(ALSi3O10)(-OH,F)2] are natural minerals. The crystal structure of natural micas contain (-OH), which begin to decomposed at 450°C or 650°C. The theremogravimetic loss of natural mica increases suddenly and starts to deteriorate at 650°C or 850°C.
- Fluorolpite Mica or F-Mica. Fluorophlogopite cannot be decomposed before the melting point ( 1375°C ), Fluorophlogopite has highest resistance of all mica. Fluorophlogopite mica tape has heat resistance up to 1200°C."
