Oxygen Control in Motlen Copper was created by Archived Forum Admin
We have rotary furnace and we use 100% pure copper scrap to produce 8mm C C rod. Initially for removal of impurities from molten copper we do air lancing which is followed by LPG lancing for reduction of oxygen. But we are not getting satisfactory results; Can you guide me which is the most effective way for reducing oxygen in molten copper?

Hello Milind,

Our first reaction is to refer you to the good advice you gave two years ago to Ifthar on 11-06-2007. The title of that thread was "Oxygen in molten copper" and it is located at www.wirenet.org/forum/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=12&Topic=436 . Has something changed in your process?

Are you sure that you have 100% pure copper scrap?

We have 99.96% pure copper scrap. Can somebody help me on how to do refining of copper so as we can cast it to make 8mm copper rod.

We are doing oxidation and reduction process but i want to know about any fluxes or additives which will help us to do refining in more better way.

Not to play with words but is your scrap 99.96% pure copper scrap or is your copper scrap 99.96 pure copper?

From copper.com:

The copper anodes are then refined electrolytically to 99.9% purity. Copper melted under non oxidizing conditions is called oxygen free copper. The most popular form of pure copper is the standard electrical wire grade of copper (C11000) contains 99.95% Cu, 0.03% O2, and less than 50 ppm metallic impurities. It has a high electrical conductivity, in excess of 100% IACS. In the as cast form it is called electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper. The structure of the as-cast material is similar to that described above.
