The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

FF-2

Same as FF-1, with 600V rating.

FFC

Designation for Flexible Flat Cable.

FFH-1

Designation for heat resistant fixture wire, otherwise same as FF-1, 300V.

FFH-2

Same as FFH-1, with 600V rating.

FHOF

Designation for a type of shipboard cable that is a four-conductor, heat and oil resistant flexible cable, 600 volt, 16 AWG to 250 mcm.

Fiber

A single, separate optical transmission element characterized by core and cladding. See listings for Fiber Optics in back section of book.

Fiber Insulation

Fiber used as an insulating material in electrical wire manufacturing by wrapping it in single, double or triple layers around the conductor in a helical fashion. Fiber insulations are the space type and provide excellent resistance to burn out and overload conditions.

Fiberglass

Glass used in a fibrous form, such as a yarn, that can be used for braiding when high heat and moisture resistance are necessary. While not as abrasion-resistant as cotton, it is satisfactory for most applications and can, if necessary, be protected with an extruded nylon jacket.

Fibrous Filler

A material used to fill interstices in cables made from fibers such as cotton, glass, etc.

Fidelity

The degree to which a system accurately reproduces an input.

Field

An area of influence around a magnet or electric charge.

Field Coil

A suitable insulated winding to be mounted on a field pole to magnetize.

Field Fencing

Usually made in galvanized steel wire, this product can also be made in aluminum or aluminum alloy. See Fencing Wire.

Field Range Speed Regulator

A typical speed regulator for a DC drive to control the speed of the DC motor over an extended speed range. It is obtained by weakening the field of the motor as well as varying the armature voltage.

Field Strength

The strength of an electromagnetic field. This measurement may be of either the electric component of the field, with units of V/m, or the magnetic component, with units of A/m2.

Field Wire

A term defining a light, small wire type usually produced in long lengths for use in military field communications.

Field, Electrostatic

The region near a charged object.

Figure 8 Cable

An aerial cable configuration in which the conductors and the strand that supports the cable are integrally jacketed. A cross-section of the finished cable approximates the figure eight.

Filament Wire

Tungsten wires are commonly used in lamps for general lighting service. These fine wires must not be out of round by more than 1 percent, which requires extreme accuracy from the diamond dies used to draw the wire.

Filled Cable

A telephone cable construction in which the cable core is filled with a material that will prevent moisture from entering or passing through.
