The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Pressure Die

Pressure Lock

A component used in the hydrostatic extrusion process.

Pressurization

The use of pressurized gas or dry air inside air core cables to prevent the entry of water at faulty splices or minor sheath cracks. It can also trigger an alarm when major faults occur and can assist in locating the damaged areas.

Pressurized Cable

A cable in which the dielectric is maintained at a pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure to combat the effect of ionization on gas in voids.

Pressurized Liquid Curing

Technique of peroxide curing of XLPE compounds with a continuous vulcanization system. This method uses heat to cause a peroxide to decompose into a reactive radical and to initiate the cure cycle.

Prestressed Concrete Strand

High-carbon, multi-wire strand used with a tensioning force applied either before (pre-tensioned) or after (post-tensioned) installation, that results in a compressive force on the concrete, increasing the concrete’s strength. This type of strand enables the use of longer spans and/or thinner sections than required by concrete that does not have such stressed reinforcement. Strand is an attractive alternative to single wire applications because it offers more surface area as well as a geometric bonding advantage and has better flexibility.

Prestressing

A process during which internal stresses are induced into a metal part such as wire or cable which have the effect of increasing the apparent elastic limit of the material. It is achieved by subjecting the part to a stress greater than that to which it is subjected under working conditions and higher than the elastic limit of the material. The plastically deformed areas resulting from this stress cause an advantageous redistribution of the stresses within the part. This is an important step in the manufacturing of springs.

Prestressing Wire Rope

Stressing a wire rope or strand before use under such a tension and for such a time that the con­structional stretch is largely removed.

Primary

1) The transformer winding which receives the energy from a supply circuit. 2) An indication of the rank of the object of this adjective as being first, main or basic.

Primary Distribution

The first phase of a power distribution system where high voltage transmission lines are too powerful to be directly useful. The high voltage transmission lines feed a secondary phase of distribution to reduce the voltage to the desired levels for the individual users.

Primary Insulation

A non-conductive material, usually the first layer over a current carrying conductor, whose prime function is to act as an electrical barrier for the applied potential.

Primary Protection

The minimum protection required on all exposed facilities to comply with NEC requirements.

Primary Rolling

Cast blooms and ingots are reduced into billets by hot rolling. This is called primary rolling, which is also a phase that allows the manufacturers to inspect and enhance the surface of the billet by conditioning.

Primary Scale

Oxide of iron that is formed while the steel is being heated.

Primary Voltage

Initial or main voltage.

Primary Wiring

A printed circuit intended to provide point-to-point electrical connections.

Prime

A rod, wire, or cable product considered to be of the highest quality and free from visible surface defects.

Primer

First operation to prepare for further processing. For example, to use a primer paint on metal surface in order that the desired paint will adhere.

Printed Circuit

A board with electronic or electrical circuits interconnecting paths of conducting material printed on its surface and designed for mounting of electronic components.

Printed Wiring

A printed circuit, or a portion thereof, intended primarily to provide point-to-point electrical connections.
