The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Put-Up

The packaging of wire and cable or the quantity of packaged product itself that is ready to be stored or shipped out.

PVC

See Polyvinyl Chloride.

PVDF Compound

Designation for polyvinylidene fluoride resin with a melting point of 171°C and a high temperature rating. It has good chemical resistance against the attack or penetration of most corrosive chemicals and organic solvents including inorganic acids, oxidants, alkalis, halogens and hydrocarbons. It is a very hard material with high tensile strength, which results in insulations with excellent cut-through resistance and good abrasion resistance.

PW

Designation for moisture-proof, reinforced, portable cord with two or more rubber-insulated conductors with individual cotton braid. Moisture-resistant cotton-braid finish over rubber jacket, 300V-600V.

PWP

See PW.

Pyroconductivity

Electric conductivity that develops with changing temperature, and notably upon fusion, in solids that are practically non-conductive at atmospheric temperatures.

Pyrometer

An instrument that uses the radiation emitted by a hot body as a basis for measuring temperatures.

P–P

Designation for Peak to Peak.
