The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. SV Cord

Cord used for sturdy construction requirements such as vacuum cleaners, motors, washing machines or portable tools such as electric drills. These cords consist of two or more stranded conductors with a serving between the copper and the insulation to prevent the fine strands from sticking to the insulation. Fillers are twisted together with the conductors to make a round assembly. A jacket of high quality rubber covers the complete cord.

SVO

Designation for conductor like SV, but with oil-resistant jacket. 300V, 60°C (140°F).

SVO Cord

Designation for conductor like SV, but with neoprene jacket.

SVOO

Designation for conductor like SVO, but with oil-resistant insulation and jacket.

SVT

Designation for conductor like SV, but all-plastic construction, 300V, 60°C to 90°C (140°F to 194°F).

SVT Cord

Cord manufactured of sturdy construction for vacuum cleaners, motors on washing machines, portable tools such as electric drills or other appliances. These cords consist of two or more stranded conductors with a serving between the copper and the insulation to prevent the fine strands from sticking to the insulation. Fillers are twisted together with the conductors to make a round assembly. The complete cord is then covered with a jacket of high quality rubber.

SVTO

Designation for conductor like SVT, but with oil resistant thermoplastic jacket, 60°C (140°F).

SVTOO

Designation for conductor like SVTO, but with oil-resistant insulation and jacket.

SW

Designation for rubber jacketed power supply cable (8 AWG to 2 AWG) CSA, 600 Volt.

SWA

Designation for Single Wire Armored.

Swaging

Deforming the profile of a work piece with an outside force powerful enough for the part to permanently change its shape. Another term for crimping. The process is applied to wires, rods and tubes and can be used for a variety of pointing, tapering, sizing and reducing operations.

Swaging, Rotary

Forming metal by means of rotating hammers and dies. The shape of the dies determines the shape to be produced. Used for pointing the ends of rod, tube and wire for insertion into the drawing die.

Sweep

A defect in flattened wire where the material deviates from a straight inline. Possible causes include: poor pre-straightening of the inlet wire; a wire line through the mill train that is not straight; guides that are not properly positioned, allowing the wire to change direction; and rolls that are not dead level.

Sweep Test

A method to determine the frequency response of a cable by generating an RF voltage whose frequency is varied at a rapid constant rate over a given range. Structural return loss values are obtained by this method.

Swept Coax

Coaxial cable that has been checked out by a sweep test and certified by the manufacturer.

SWG

Designation for Standard Wire Gauge.

Swift

A type of payoff used to uncoil wire and facilitate changing a new coil after welding.

Switch

A device that makes or breaks connections in an electrical, electronic or mechanical circuit.

Switch, Knife

A switch in which the circuit is closed by moving a blade engaging contact clips.

SWO

Designation for conductor like SW, but neoprene jacketed.
