The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Sword Spool

A shaped spool on which the weft wire is wound to fit into the shuttle on a weaving machine.

SWT

Designation for plastic jacketed power supply cable (8 AWG to 2 AWG) 600V (C.S.A.).

SXL

Designation for heavy walled thermoset primary wire. Can be bare or tinned copper.

Synchronism

When connected AC systems, machines or a combination operate at the same frequency and when the phase angle displacements between voltages in them are constant, or vary about a steady and stable average value.

Synchronous Machine

A machine in which the average speed of normal operation is exactly proportional to the frequency of the system to which it is connected.

Synchronous Speed

The speed of rotation of the magnetic flux produced by linking the primary winding. An AC induction motor is designed with a certain number of poles that determine its speed when connected to power of a specific frequency. For example, a four-pole motor run on 60-hertz power has a synchronous speed of 1800 RPM. In actual use, the motor will run at a slightly lower speed, typically around 1725 RPM, due to the slip characteristic of the motor.

Synchrotron

A device for accelerating charged particles to high energies in a vacuum. The particles are guided by a changing magnetic field while they are accelerated in a closed path.

Synthetic Diamond

Man-made diamonds used to manufacture wiredrawing dies.

Synthetic Solution

Wiredrawing lubricants that are formulated with man-made ingredients and without any natural mineral or animal fats.
