The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Basic Brass Wire

See Yellow Wire.

Basic Conductor Load

The limiting conductor-load per unit length assumed for the purposes of design.

Basic Material

A chemical expression meaning the opposite of acid. Basic and acid materials, when brought together so that they can react, neutralize each other, forming salts or slags. The base becomes the positive part of the salt and the acid the negative. Typical basic materials include limestone, magnesite and dolomite while typical acid materials include quartzite or silica, various clays, oxides of sulfur, etc. In metallurgy, the term “bases” and “acids” are applied to refractories, fluxes and slags. Slags are said to be basic when the bases in them are greater than the acids, or to be acidic when the acids in them are greater than the bases.

Basic Oxygen Furnace

See Furnace, Basic Oxygen.

Basic Steel

See Steel.

Basket Handle Wire

Galvanized coppered or annealed low-carbon wire.

Basket Weaves

Another name for Multiplex weave.

Bastard Round-Oval Grooving

A technique of sequencing the number of passes used to roll special steel. The main objective is to have a uniform temperature distribution to avoid cracks and a high degree of elongation. It uses uniform forming to increase inner tensions and uniform wear of grooves.

Batch Acid Regeneration

Acid regeneration is used to recover usable acid from a cleaning process after removing metals such as iron. This process is widely used with sulfuric acid cleaning lines to remove iron to allow for continued use of the sulfuric acid. The spent acid is chilled so that a ferrous sulfate crystal is created, removed and the acid returned for continued use.

Batten

A part of a weaving loom which operates horizontally across the loom and which beats the wire into position during the cloth or mesh weaving. Also known as either a lay, slay or sleigh.

Battery Cable

A single conductor cable, insulated or uninsulated, used for carrying current from batteries to the point power is needed. Also used for grounding.

Bauxite

The principal ore of aluminum. About 4 kg are needed to produce 1 kg of aluminum. It is a constituent of nearly all earthly materials and is unavoidably present in most slags. Bauxite is also used in the manufacture of alumina refractories for withstanding extremely high temperatures.

BC

Designation for bare copper or bell cord.

BCC

Designation for body-centered cubic crystal structure.

BCF

See Billion Conductor Feet.

BDC

Designation for Plastic Bus Drop Cable.

Bead Wire

Also known as tire wire, this product is made from silicon-killed, hot-rolled, Stelmore-cooled, high carbon (0.65% - 0.80%) steel rod drawn to 0.96–2.00 mm. Tire wire is used to reinforce the bead area of a pneumatic tire. It is typically bronze-coated; however, some manufacturers produce brass-coated bead wire.

Beaded Coax

Coaxial cable with a dielectric consisting of beads made of various materials.

Bearing Quality Steels

Steels used for balls, rollers and races of anti-friction bearings. Great hardness and resistance to crushing are the chief requirements. These properties are obtained with carbon, chromium, and vanadium. Chief representatives are SAE 52100 and SAE 6195 steels.

Becket Loop

A loop of small rope or strand fastened to the end of a large wire rope to facilitate installation.
