The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Roughing Pass

Each time a metal stock is subjected to a rolling mill roughing stand for initial reduction or shaping. This could be one mill stand with reversing passes or a multiple stand tandem mill with one pass through all stands.

Roughing Stand

The rolls used for breaking down the ingot or billet in the preliminary rolling of metal products or working slabs of stock into thinner plates for subsequent operations.

Roughness

Relatively finely spaced surface irregularities, the height, width and direction of which establish the predominant surface pattern.

Round Conductor

A conductor whose cross-section is substantially circular.

Round Conductor Flat Cable

A cable made with parallel round conductors in the same plane.

Round Cornered Squares

A bar product square in cross sections with rounded corners and size ranges from 9.9 mm to 203 mm (3/8 in. to 8 in.) inclusive.

Round Groove

The profile of a roll that produces round rod.

Round Outside, Polygonal Inside Tube

Tube that has outside periphery of circular section and nominally concentric, regular polygonal inside periphery.

Round Wire

Wire that is circular in cross section as opposed to flat or square.

Round Wire Shields

Shields constructed from bare, tinned or silver-plated copper wire. Three types include braided, spiral and reverse spiral.

Roundness

The parameter to indicate the degree of concentricity of the cross section of the object being measured. The term “ovalness” is also used.

Router

In the electrical industry, a Level 3 Relay or an intermediate system.

Routing

The path followed by a cable or conductor.

ROV

Designation for strong sulfuric acid.

RP

Designation for performance grade rubber insulation, 60°C (140°F).

RPM

Designation for Revolutions Per Minute.

RR

Designation for rubber insulation, neoprene jacket. See USE.

RS

Designation for integral rubber insulation and jacket on single conductor cables.

RTL

Designation for Rubber Test Lead.

RTS

Designation for Reverse Twist Secondary cable.
