The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Rolled-in Metal

An extraneous chip or sliver of metal (can be the same material or foreign material) that is rolled into the surface of a rod. Also referred to as rolled-in scrap.

Rolled-in Scratches

Scratches that occur during the fabricating process and are subsequently rolled over. The rolling over of the scratch makes it relatively smooth to the touch.

Roller

1) In rolling mill terminology, a part of a roller table which is more for material handling as contrasted with “roll” which is part of a rolling mill stand which is part of the product producing function. The roller transports the metal stock to the stands or acts as a carryout table after the specific operation releases the stock. 2) The person in charge of the actual rolling. 3) The component of a rolling operation that is designed to develop the product with a necessary profile, either progressive, grooved or whatever design is required.

Roller Die

Equipment very similar to a Turks Head but designed to replace conventional die boxes in drawing round rather than shaped wire. See Die, Roller.

Roller Table

Mechanism in various rolling and processing application that is used to receive the product as it is released from the operation, or used as a transfer device between operations. It usually consists of a conveyor made of rolls.

Rollerized Rod Delivery Pipe

The component in the delivery phase of the finished rod from a continuous cast rolling operation. It is usually designed to prevent scratches on the rod surface.

Rolling

Reducing the cross-sectional area of metal stock, or otherwise shaping metal products, through the use of rotating rolls.

Rolling Flaw

A surface flaw on a product that is generated during a rolling operation.

Rolling Mill

Equipment in which metal stock is rolled into different shapes and sizes by the action of rolls exerting force on the stock as the material passes between rotating rolls mounted in a framework comprising a basic unit called a stand. Cylindrical rolls produce flat shapes, grooved rolls produce round, square and structural shapes.

ROM

Designation for Read Only Memory.

Root-Mean-Square

An arithmetic tool to establish a value that can be used as a parameter from a set of numbers in a data collection step. The term is defined as the square root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of the set of numbers. In the electrical industry, it is the effective value of an alternating current or voltage. When the term is applied to alternating voltage and current, it means the effective value, i.e. it produces the same heating effect as a direct current or voltage of the same magnitude.

Root-Mean-Square Current

The alternating current value that corresponds to the direct current value that will produce the same heating effect.

Rope

See entries under Wire Rope.

Rotary Braiders

High-speed braiders that produce a tubular braid either over a core material or over a solid cord product. There are two sets of carriers rotating in a circular pass and in opposite directions. The braid strands from the lower carriers are guided over and under the upper carriers. This deflection from a straight path as the strands leave the final let-off guide to the braid points is done by a combination of deflector plates, upper carrier shape, rocker arms or fixed guides.

Rotary Chill-Casting Wheel

The continuous casting wheel that is divided in general cooling zones to perform different modes of cooling depending upon the type of product produced.

Rotating Cutters

A shaving tool designed to groove the incoming rod so that the discarded chips are of similar size and easily break up into smaller pieces.

Rotating Head Straightening

The process of straightening wire by means of the rotation of a series of shaped dies pressed against the wire surface to repeatedly flex it in all planes through the axis as it is moved forward through the machine by means of feed rolls. This type of straightening machine usually has an automatic cutting-to-length device.

Rotodie

A stationary coiling unit that carries out a reduction in addition to performing the coiling function.

Rotolay

A type of stationary coiling block in which the axis of the block is vertical and the wire is discharged vertically downward with the coils always in a horizontal plane. The wire is led through the center of the block to the underside and then taken out to the block surface over a distributor arm, which lays one turn of wire onto the block with each revolution and allows one turn to drop from the block onto a stationary former or container placed underneath.

Roughing Mill

Used for preliminary rolling. Usually consists of horizontal and vertical edging rolls or a continuous train of horizontal rolls, depending on the nature of the finished product. The initial rolling processes to reduce the cross section as expeditiously as possible are therefore called roughing.
